Dear Professor Hansen,
Canadian Scholars is facilitating a call for chapter proposals for a planned contributed volume under consideration by our press. Co-editors Efrat Gold and Simon Adam are editing an exciting new anthology in Mad Studies concentrating on the development, creation, use, limits, and re-inventions of methodologies of enquiry, with a specific interest in those that use critical interdisciplinary frameworks. This collection will center a mad-focused orientation to research, writing, arts, and activism. The editors seek chapter proposals that excavate the doing of mad studies and mad work more broadly, with the aim of bringing the reader into the process of generating mad discourse, practice, life, and knowledge, broadly conceived. |

What does it mean to have a methodology and how much of this meaning arises from specific disciplinary context? As tools of intellectual excavation, methods indicate a researcher’s commitment to praxis – whether scholarly, arts-based, community-centered, scientific, etc., methods are often presented as reliable instruments of enquiry, endowing validity and informing both the purpose and boundaries of exploration. However, critical disciplines that foreground marginality push and pull at the limits of methods and methodologies, at times turning the subject of enquiry onto traditional methods themselves. Can methods be used outside of the specific situation or discipline in which they were imagined as a valid and valuable tool of enquiry? What happens to concepts of ‘validity’ and ‘reliability’ when methods are approached critically, through inter/trans/post-disciplinarity, and/or from below? When working at the intersections of various margins, how can methods provide or hinder the political and philosophical goals of enquiry?

In excavating the various methods of madness and mad studies, the editors invite contributions that demonstrate the purposeful doing of methodology – as a usable tool, as a means to explore what is otherwise inaccessible, as a process that necessarily leaves a residue on the content it seeks enquiry into, and everything in between.

Co-editors Efrat Gold and Simon Adam welcome abstracts from both established and emerging scholars and teams, including graduate students and other community members involved in doing madness.

Abstract Deadline: May 1, 2023 (200-250 words) Please also include a short bio (or bios for abstracts with multiple authors).
Proposed deadline for full chapters: June 1, 2024 (4,000 words)
